Retail Industry

A very big spheres by it self. The term retail industry it self signifies a major giant. To think of retail as industry is a common notion. This is a giant, which is encompassing All other major industries in the world. With the influx of MNC’S and the flexible trade policies of the government, it has become much easier for the foreign investors to invest in our countries. The various amendments in the trade practices and exim policies have lead to making this retail industry what it is today. With the giants like wall mart and other biggies going retail it can be imagined.

A very wise businessman will always do a study or conduct a research before he goes retail. Now the retailers have realised that the consumers can buy the same goods or merchandise in any other retail shop. So there needs of retail industry to be a constant effort on the part of the retailers to keep the customers happy, the retail stores keep coming up with various promotional offers and the likes to keep the customers happy and to make sure that these customers keep coming back. Many retailers, however, are not as aware of the broader "shopping mode choices" of consumers. These alternatives include shopping in a local retail store (local shopping), shopping out of town (out shopping), or shopping at home through mail, telephone or computer (in-home shopping). Depending on the shopping mode choice of consumers, retailers may have little, if any, chance of attracting the consumers to their stores. That is, if certain consumers choose out shopping or in-home shopping for a significant portion of their purchases, local retailers will have lost their business, not to alternative stores, but to different shopping mode preferences.

The retail industry is also a source of employment to many. As mentioned above the “shopping mode” can be altered, for example a person who shops on the net can be converted to a shopper in a store. But then there are various other factors, which need to be kept in mind.
